Independent women?

We are every woman until we need something done around the house or our car breaks down. Come on ladies! Let’s be real independent women and master the small stuff ourselves! Nobody is asking you to fix a motor, but knowing how to change your oil isn’t the worst thing in the world, even if you never do it. Further, let’s face this reality: if you don’t know how to do these things, you become an open wallet. Yes, some of my friends pay handymen to come over to hang pictures and put together small IKEA furniture items (To their credit, those IKEA picture directions are a whole mess!) they could manage themselves. It wouldn’t matter so much if the handyman was a potential boyfriend, and she was playing the damsel in distress role, but to actually pull out $20s to hang a picture? FAIL!

10 things every single lady who lives alone should have or know how to do:

1) Own and operate a fire extinguisher

2) Own and operate a canister of pepper spray

3) An escape plan for fires and intruders

4) A small tool kit that includes a hammer, large and small flathead and Philips screwdrivers, a crank flashlight a crank radio (you know you’ll forget to change the batteries!), an assortment of nails and screws of different sizes, a tape measure, regular pliers and a needle-nose pliers and a box cutter

5) Know the location of the circuit breakers in her home and how to shut off the water to all the sinks, toilets, and washing machine

6) If she owns a car, the following items should be in her car: season appropriate shoes that she can walk in (trust me, if your car breaks down and you need to walk, Red Bottoms are not your friend!), jumper cables, half-gallon gas can, blanket, spare tire, tire jack, a 4-way wrench, a paid up Triple A membership card, a crank flash light, and an umbrella

7) Check all the fluids in her car, know how to clean her battery posts, know how to use the jumper cables from #5, and change a tire

8) A power drill (at least 32 volts) and a 5 foot ladder

9) Duct tape and WD 40 (They’re like Franks Hot Sauce; they fix everything!)
