If you never really worried much about your future career, well know is the time to care. A study about gender equality by Oxfam found that working women wouldn’t have equal pay to men in their lifetimes and neither will their daughters. The gap between men and women pay has been closing at an extremely slow rate so women won’t earn equal pay for at least another 75 years.
One of the biggest reasons for the gap is that women are more likely than men to do unpaid care work. As a result, women are more likely to be employed part-time or in jobs like domestic work.
This reminded me of a discussion I had in a sociology class. We were talking about equal pay and which jobs deserve more or less money than they earn. Who should get paid more, a childcare worker or a carpenter?
Needless to say, the class was pretty split but most people thought that it would be fair for both jobs to get a higher pay. It was agreed that both jobs were extremely essential to the function of our country. Now although this was a mutual decision, it is far from reality and this recent study proves just how far it is.
Perhaps if it was recognized by policy makers the necessity of childcare workers (a female dominated job), they would get paid more and as a result helping to decrease the equal pay gap at a faster rate. However, this is just one of the reasons for the gap and who knows if a change could really make a difference.
