Forbes recently released their list for The World’s Most Powerful Celebrities. Out of the first ten celebrities on that list, seven were African American. Among those seven, three were women. Now while some of these celebs aren’t the richest people, I think the fact that Forbes is naming a number of African American celebrities as the most powerful is great. This is the most number of African American celebrities that have been featured in the top ten in all the 16 years that Forbes has been releasing the list.
Oprah has repeatedly been on the list and Beyoncé has been on and off. Overall, I think this is a great representation of black females that young women should know about. Their idols are being recognized in a world that is dominated by white males. These females are exhibiting power that years ago would have never been allowed.
This is a great step in representations of black women but more definitely needs to be done. Although Oprah and Beyoncé are seen as powerful black women, black women in general are misrepresented through different forms of media. They have been reduced to big butts and breasts. Physical attributes are being celebrated more that intellectual characteristics.
Video Vixens cover magazines and twerk videos are taking over the Internet but facts such as black women being the most educated group in the United States are rarely shared. In certain media outlets, African American women are increasingly becoming more praised for good qualities but those outlets are still overshadowed by the bad. On a brighter note though, eventually with positive images and representations being recognized, the image African American women have been given in recent years can change for the better.
