Last Friday (May 30, 2014), I attended The Celebration of Black Writing is the Lifetime Achievement Award Ceremony — the “Oscars of Black Writing” — which honors authors and institutions who have been major contributors to the proliferation of black literature and literacy. The event was sponsored by the Arts Sanctuary organization which is located in the Southwest section of the City near Graduate Hospital.
I was excited about the awards ceremony because I like to be out and about in the City and do different things. Who wants to go to a movie EVERY weekend or hit the club EVERY FRIDAY? Sometimes, I want to turnup for something different. So, I put on my “cute girl” dress, convinced two of my friends to clean up, and we went to the show to respect the three honorees: Ernest J. Gains, Carvin and Ivan, and The Lomax Family Foundation.
The event was going very well. Several performances had taken place by artists singing songs written by Carvin Haggins and Ivan Barias. They’ve written songs for Justin Timberlake, Musiq Soulchild, Jill Scott, Chrisette Michelle, Patti LaBelle and more. Then, LEDISI SHOWED UP! We had no idea that she would be in the house. She wasn’t part of the advertisements, and we only paid $25 to get in! Of course, I pulled out my ever-present camera! So, here is a little something-something for you (Click for the video).
Since the event was not a Ledisi concert, she was gracious and sang one song and continued to share the venue, Temple Performing Arts Center, with the other artists. From the Young Poet representing the Philadelphia Youth Poetry Movement to Ledisi to the Saxophonist, the ceremony was a great!
It was a lot of fun. Sometimes, it isn’t about turning down, its about switching the station!
